Plug-in hybrid tech suits Audi's lighter, more agile full-size seven-seat SUV

The Q7 Mk2 was a step change from its predecessor. Sure it's still a big 7-seat SUV, but Audi put it on a crash diet, which boosted efficiency and performance no end. What's more, the plug-in etron model makes the most of these weight savings by delivering low emissions on a par with a supermini.

Unlike many plug-in hybrid rivals, the Q7 doesn't have a four-cylinder petrol engine. Instead, it gets a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, and it's mated to a sporty eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox. The electric motor combines with the V6 to make a total of 254bhp, but there's also a meaty 700Nm of torque. That helps blast the Q7 from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds, which is pretty quick for such a large SUV.

While the Q7 is smaller than its predecessor, there's still room inside for seven, and the hybrid tech doesn't intrude on this passenger carrying capacity. As you would expect, the interior is built to a high standard, as this is a flagship model and a showcase for Audi's hybrid tech.
