Hybrid saloon combines sporty handling with low electric running costs to great effect

The 330e is more of a performance hybrid than a fuel-saving one. BMW markets it under the iPerformance banner, and it has been developed from technology first seen in the i3 and i8 electric models. Unlike some plug-in models, the 330e is simply part of the 3 Series range, and comes in SE, Sport and M Sport trims.

Whichever you choose, you get a 2.0-litre petrol engine that has the electric motor mounted behind it to deliver a total of 252bhp and give the 330e 0-62mph acceleration in 6.1 seconds.

The extra weight of the batteries and electric motor mean the rear-wheel drive 330e isn't quite as nimble as its petrol-powered cousins, but it gets close. And when it comes to company car costs, the slightly blunted driving experience is worth the sacrifice when 49g/km emissions bring Benefit-In-Kind tax costs so low.
