J is for…J-Gate. Jaguar first introduced the so-called J-Gate automatic transmission on the XJ40 in 1986. It enabled the driver to select and hold on to individual gears as well as simply select D, or full auto mode.

Much loved by old school Jaguar fans, the J-Gate design was eventually dropped in favour of a rotary dial and steering wheel mounted paddles when production of the S-Type ended in 2007.
