New 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV revealed at Geneva

The latest Hyundai Santa Fe SUV has arrived boasting new tech and a sharp redesign

Hyundai has completely uncovered the new 2018 Santa Fe at the Geneva Motor Show, with the fourth generation SUV appearing publicly for the first time ahead of global sales beginning later this year.

The new Santa Fe brings updated looks that are inspired by the recently launched Kona SUV. At the front of the car there is a rather large hexagonal grille and slim LED running lights. There is also a chunky front bumper which features an integrated number plate, which alongside the overemphasised wheel arches helps give the Santa Fe an aggressive look.

Around the back, the car's rear end evolves with a new bumper, a new tailgate and fresh tail light clusters. A roof spoiler injects a bit of sporting appeal.  

Hyundai promises that the new Santa Fe will boast class leading roominess in the seven-seat SUV segment, and the new car is both longer and wider than the outgoing model, sizing up at 4,470mm long and with a width of 1,890mm. That translates to an additional 38mm of legroom for second row passengers, who sit 18mm higher than before. Right in the back, third row passengers get a bit of extra headroom - 22mm more to be precise. Hyundai says that boot space has been improved, but an official figure has not been released. 

Inside, the dashboard has been overhauled with a floating tablet-style infotainment system as found in many other recent Hyundais, new switchgear and vents, a new steering wheel and a fresh instrument cluster with a digital display too. Hyundai says that the new, horizontal-style layout has been developed with an added emphasis on premium feel, too.

With UK specs still to be decided, Hyundai says that standard cars globally will use an audio system boasting a five-inch TFT screen with AUX and Bluetooth connections. A larger seven-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be available, while an eight-inch touchscreen unit incorporating sat-nav and a rear-view camera will be on range-topping models. The new Santa Fe also features a head-up display, and a TFT screen embedded between the dials in the instrument panel, while a wireless charging pad for compatible smartphones is included.

When it comes to safety and driver assistance tech, the Santa Fe builds on Hyundai's current suite of SmartSense assistance features by introducing rear cross traffic alert, plus a new feature called Safety Exit Assist, which temporarily locks the doors when it senses a vehicle approaching from behind and removes the chance of a passenger opening the door into the path of a passing car.

New Rear Occupant Alert warns the driver that passengers are still in the back before locking and leaving the vehicle - a feature developed with children in mind. Elsewhere, the Santa Fe boasts a forward collision warning system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist that works at speeds up to 37mph and blind spot monitoring. 

Hyundai says it has made an effort to make the Santa Fe more comfortable, and has developed the suspension to deliver a smoother ride than before. The set-up itself has been made stiffer, but boasts a longer travel length. A self-leveling system which keeps the ride height constant regardless of load and weight in the car is on the options list. 

Under the bonnet, Hyundai has prepared two diesel and two petrol options for the European market, although which of these engines will be heading to the UK has not been revealed. Both petrol units are 2.4-litres - one a GDI unit, the other badged MPI. A 2.2-litre diesel is on the cards - likely to be the current car's 2.2-litre unit - while a new 2.0-litre diesel is promised as well. A new, enhanced eight-speed automatic gearbox makes the cut, sending power to a Hyundai HTRAC all-wheel-drive system. 

Though unconfirmed for now, it’s possible that hybrid technology could appear further down the line, too. Hyundai will introduce 31 new low emissions models across the Hyundai and Kia line-up by 2020, with plans to expand its hybrid line-up to include SUVs and large vehicles.
