The Golf GTE is as close as you can currently get to buying a plug-in hot hatchback

Volkswagen's recent update of the Golf Mk7 extended to the plug-in GTE, although it didn't do anything to improve the car's hybrid system. However, that's not to say the GTE was bad in the first place. It's one of the few sporty plug-ins you can buy, and while it doesn't quite offer the same hot hatch masterclass as a GTI, it gets pretty close.

The 1.4 TSI petrol engine and electric motor are mated to a seven-seed DSG gearbox that delivers rapid shifts, while selecting GTE mode via the button on the centre console firms up the dampers, sharpens throttle response and adds a sporty exhaust note to give the car a hot-hatch feel.

The GTE stands out thanks to its bright blue detailing, while the C-shaped daytime running lights are a styling cue that's standard on all of VW's plug-in models.
